Pain treatments: Interventions... The use of targeted local anaesthetic injections with and without steroid may be recommended for two purposes. Firstly as a diagnostic technique to clarify the pain generating tissues or structures, and secondly, in association with steroid, to act therapeutically to reduce inflammation of the target structure and provide  longer lasting benefit. Trigger point injections may be recommended to reduce or eliminate pain from a specific target area such as a muscle, tendon or nerve which may be producing the pain condition, and may have benefit for a prolonged period of time. These may give a clear indication of the pain diagnosis and can help to differentiate pain from different structures, as well as to treat conditions such as fasciitis. Nerve injections may be used to establish that pain within a body area is arising from the distribution of a specific nerve, and may help to confirm a diagnosis as well as to guide further treatment. Examples include the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh in merelgia paraesthetica, a nerve root injection in disc prolapse or lateral recess stenosis and facet nerve injection for degenerative facet syndrome in the spine.
